Southern Grist Brewing Company is Expanding by Adding New Facilities in the Nations Neighborhood
While Keeping East Nashville Location on Porter Road
NASHVILLE, May 2, 2017 – “We are adding an additional tap room and expanding our production space. Our first year in business as a brewery blew us away. We never imagined how well our craft would be received in this great city. The East Nashville community supported us like a violent force which is why we will keep our beloved East Nashville tap room for as long as we are allowed; we still have multi-year renewals on the space” – Kevin Antoon, Founder/CEO
Why are we expanding? While on the outside it seemed like everything was just falling into place in year 1 and looked easy, our biggest struggle was (and is) keeping up with demand. We just can’t make enough beer on our current 4 barrel system and we can’t fit a bigger system in our current space. As we hear daily, yes it is a “good problem to have”…but stressful nonetheless. We are turning down dozens of requests every month to serve our beer at different establishments which just isn’t a good way to move forward as a business. That said, when we ramp up we will still be very selective about where our beer is served to maintain the highest level of quality and customer service with our partners.
Where are we adding the new spaces? To aid in this expansion, we are adding a new tap room location and production space in the Nations neighborhood. Both the tap room and brew space will be located in the “Stocking 51” complex on 51st Ave North and Centennial Blvd., which is currently home to Nicky’s Coal Fired, Fashionable, and soon to be many more businesses in the coming months. The production space will be approximately 9,000 square feet and the neighboring tap room that runs along Centennial Blvd will be 2,000 additional square feet.
What size system are we moving to? We have chosen to partner with BrewFab, a brewery equipment provider located in St. Petersburg, FL that manufactures all equipment 100% in the USA, on a 15 barrel system. Why? This size system will immediately quadruple production and it will continue to allow us to be creative with our beer recipes. This new system will allow us to support the taps at both locations and distribute to additional accounts.
What’s next? It will be business as usual in the East Nashville location. For the Nations location, there is still a monumental amount of work to be done. In addition to having a 20 week lead time on the brew system, we still have to build out 11,000 square feet of space, obtain permits, and navigate the proper channels to be able to manufacture and brew beer in the new space.
How can I stay up to date? Follow us on social media (tags below). We will post progress photos, updates on timelines, and when we have new information we will point you to our web page via social media.
We are extremely proud of the hard work that our employees and everyone associated with the brewery have put in to date. We also wouldn’t be where we are without our customers and partners supporting us along the way. Stay tuned as we continue our growth journey. More to come…
